Duct repair in Palo Alto fixes the most common cause of uneven rooms: air leaking or getting stuck before it reaches the vent. Older homes often have disconnected runs, crushed flex duct and undersized returns in attics and crawlspaces. ComfortFlow measures airflow at each register, seals or replaces failing sections, and balances the system so every room gets its share.

Signs your ducts are the problem

  • One or two rooms never match the thermostat
  • Weak airflow from vents farthest from the equipment
  • Dust that returns quickly after cleaning
  • A whistling return grille or doors that slam when the system starts
  • High bills with equipment that seems to run fine
  • Musty smells from a crawlspace system

Why Palo Alto homes have duct problems

Many Palo Alto homes were built long before central air existed. Ducts were added later, threaded through tight attics and shallow crawlspaces, often with long runs of flexible duct that sag, kink or get stepped on. Decades later, joints separate and insulation breaks down. In homes that have been remodeled, rooms were sometimes added without any new duct capacity at all.

How we diagnose airflow

We measure, not guess. That means static pressure readings at the equipment, airflow at each register, and a look at every accessible run. When it’s useful, a duct leakage test quantifies how much conditioned air is escaping into the attic or crawlspace.

What we fix

  • Sealing joints and seams with mastic and UL-listed tape
  • Reconnecting separated runs and replacing crushed flex duct
  • Adding or enlarging returns so the system can breathe
  • Re-insulating ducts in attics and crawlspaces
  • Balancing with dampers so every room gets the right share
  • Redesigning duct systems for new heat pumps, which move more air at lower temperatures

Ducts and heat pumps

If you’re planning a heat pump, get the ducts checked first. Heat pumps deliver air at lower temperatures than gas furnaces, so leaks and undersized runs that you never noticed before can make a new system feel weak. Fixing ducts during the heat pump install is far easier than going back later.

GOOD TO KNOW

Ductwork & Airflow questions,
answered.

Straight answers before you book.

Why is one room always hotter than the rest?

Usually a long, leaky or crushed duct run, a missing return, or sun exposure the system was never designed for. We measure airflow to that room to find the cause.

Is duct cleaning worth it?

Sometimes, after construction or if there’s visible debris or pests. More often, sealing leaks and improving filtration does more for comfort and dust than cleaning.

How long do ducts last?

Flex duct often needs replacing after 20 to 25 years as the liner and insulation break down. Metal ducts last longer, but joints still need sealing.

Can you add ducts to a room addition?

Yes, if the system has capacity. If not, a ductless mini-split for the addition is often the better solution.

Do I need new ducts for a heat pump?

Not always. Many existing duct systems work well after sealing and a few changes. We test before recommending replacement.
